Sorry about this guys, but not able to turn XP's virus protection off. I am just not remembering and Microsoft site is not much help. Help thanks.

Microsoft does not have a built in virus scanner (unless you're doing some part of the OneCare beta). What exactly is the application name you're trying to disable?

XP does not have built in virus protection, but does have a built in firewall. It also detects whether you have virus protection or not, maybe that is what you are looking for.

To turn off the firewall go to the Security Center under Control Panel and from there you can turn on/off "Automatic Updates", "Firewall", and "Virus Protection Detection".

Hope this helps,

Erik

While viewing the Security Center page (accessed via Control Panel or the RedX icon in the Notification Area), under the heading of Resources is the option to "Change the way Security Center alerts me". May be this is what you are after?
