I set up a share on my computer and need access to it from the outside. I have a static IP address through a cable modem and heard you can map a drive on a computer to another computer using the IP address. How do you do this? I have been unsuccessful so far.

About the only thing you can do is to telnet into your remote PC. You won't be creating a network drive, just accessing it via the static IP address.

But doubt that you'll get this to work. If you can do it, so can everybody else who finds your IP address! The security issues are huge and remote access over the 'net for anything other than file transfer is painfully slow.

You might have better luck with Laplink. I've used it before to do remote computing. I accessed the PC via dial-up modem whose number only the phione company and I had. Again, using Windows remotely like this is slow but it works and is easy to set up. There's always a better way...

If you install/enable file sharing for the internet interface, any shared resources on your PC should be available on the internet using \\ipaddress\sharename (so someone else can map a drive to that). Obviously if you do this, password protecting your shares is also a good idea.

Note: If you have no shared resources currently (because file sharing not installed for any interface), just share what you want after installing it.
