How do you guard your system files from install/uninstall

There are people like me who always want to tinker their PC's with new softwares, freewares, games, and later remove it if not desired. We don't just sit down and just do what we already know, though I'm also a newbie in PC's. For me, I use Inctrl5, Total Uninstall, and Smartsweep/Cleansweep (and of course SFC) in Win 98SE. Guys out there, how do you guard your system files and dlls from these frequent install and uninstall?
 
I use the add/remove programs in the control panel that comes with windows. If you are not sure which dll's to delete just tell it no to all when it ask if you want to remove the installed dll's. Rob
