In Win98, of course, you can stop TSRs from running through MSCONFIG. But Win95 offers no such luxury. I know about the Start Menu, but many of them are not listed there. So how can I achieve the same thing in Win95 that I can through MSCONFIG in Win98?

Unfortunately the hard way by editing files and the registry.
or get hold of norton utilities or similar. Take control of your life, not someone else's

Forget Norton,

You can do it manually in the registry:
backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
and delete the entry in the right pane.

Or try these freeware apps:
Startup Control Panel
Startup Control Panel is a nifty control panel applet that allows you to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It's simple to use and, like all my programs, is very small and won't burden your system. A valuable tool for system administrators!

You might be interested in this 3rd party clone for the msconfig tool in Win95. There is no registry editting needed, this one permanently deletes the entries if you choose that option.

It's called Startup Cop. It's freeware. Here's a link:

I have Norton SystemWorks, and it has a fine Registry editing tool. Ironically, however, I never use that particular tool in Norton (although I make ample use of many of its other tools). As you do, I simply use Regedit when I want to go there. In this case, I didn't know where to go, and you showed me.

Nonetheless, the links you provided showed a better way to do it--you get a star! You ought to write an FAQ with the info you provided. I'll bet others have had this question, too.

Best to you
Butch

If you are doing it manually, as well as the registry keys reghakr mentions, also look in your win.ini and system.ini files for entries under Load or Run.

Good basic advice, Mulga. I hope reghakr notes it and includes it in his FAQ. ;-)

There are third party utilities that run in W95 that do a good approximation of msconfig.Startup control panel by Mike lin at I am pretty sure states it runs on W95.
