What do you need to know? Barcodescanners are usually connected to the serial port or the keyboard port. They send normal character data, mostly followed by a ending character. If you connected one to your keyboard port and scan something in for example word, you will recieve some letters. And if it is one connected to the serial port then you will need to read the serialport buffer. But it is easy. Ok there are also usb version, but they work almost the same ;-)
