Okie... I have a modem, a Rockwell HCF 56k DataFax PCI Modem, which has no jumpers on it to change it's settings, and is set to COM2. BeOS 4.5 doesn't support COM1 or COM2 modems, and they say to change the jumpers on the modem to make sure that doesn't happen, but i can't.
What i've tried so far: the system is a Compaq Presario 5240, and the BIOS for this computer is a little less than user friendly. i looked for anything that might have to do with plug-n-play settings, to see if it might prevent the autoset COM2, but failed. i feel this may have been the fault of the BIOS's lack of control (there was nothing that explicitly said "want plug-n-play?disable:enable"
. I've tried suffling the modem between slots, but knew that wouldn't work to begin with... the software and manual for the modem has no helpful tips.
I have no idea what to do at this point except buy a new modem, a new version of BeOS, or a new BIOS chipset.
Good luck, anyone who thinks they can solve this.
