How do i remove the conhook.a trojan?

I have tried spybot and ms defender and although defender says it's been removed the problem persists. The OS is XP SP2 with IE6. The symptons are that when you browse the web multiple pop up windows appear. Thanks for looking and hopefully you can help.

conHook is a downloader trojan. It will sit there and helpfully download spyware for you, just as fast you uninstall it.
A real antivirus program should be able to get rid of it. You'll probably need to turn off system restore temporarily, and boot into safe mode to be able to completely clean this one out.
But kaspersky, norton, avg, f-prot, etc should all be able to get this.
