How do I remove the Athlon XP standard heatsink?

I just bought a new motherboard, and I want to take the CPU out of my old motherboard.

I know this should be easy, but I don't want to risk damaging my CPU through trial and error.

Unfortunately, the cowboys who built my original PC didn't send me any documentation about the XP1600+ CPU, so I don't know what I should be doing.

Help!!!!

The Athlon CPUs are very susceptible to chipping when fitting or removing the heatsink so extreme care must be taken. To remove the heatsink / fan unit you will see a metal clamp which goes over the heatsink and under the fan. On one side should be a small tab sticking out, you have to press down on this, possibly with a screwdriver blade, and free the clamp from the small lug on the motherboard. Great care must be taken during this procedure. Make sure the heatsink is held level and stationary while you do it. When this is free the heatsink and fan will lift off the CPU, then to remove the CPU itself lift the lever which you will see beside it, this is held down by a small locking lug and must be pulled slightly sideways before it can be lifted. The CPU will now be free and can be lifted out of the socket. No force should be required to do this.

When replacing the CPU in the new board you must ensure it is properly oriented, you will see one corner with a small chamfer on both CPU and socket, these must be aligned. All old thermal paste should be cleaned off the heatsink and CPU before it is replaced (use alcohol or white spirit) and a small quantity of new thermal paste spread on the base of the heatsink. This should be as thin a layer as you can achieve. Again use extreme care to keep the heatsink level when replacing it.

Don't forget to take some precautions regarding static.
Stay grounded, but be sure and turn off the Power/Supply switch, which supplies current to the system.

Thanks very much for the tips - processor successfully removed and reinstalled!!! :)

Not as easy as I thought it would be though ;-)
