How do I open Excel from Sun Solaris?

I have an application running under Sun Solaris written in C using an Informix database.

I want to provide a menu option for a report.

When it's selected, data is extracted and passed to an Excel spreadsheet on Windows NT.

???

If need be, I could write the application in C++.
