I have a couple basic sets (1 button, no display) and no matter what I try, you can't just pick up the phone and dial. you have to hit 9 to get an outside line.

what am I missing out on ?
thanks

You most likely have "9" entered in as an external code. I have really old software on my KSU, but the external code option is found for me under:

A. Configuration
5. Miscellaneous

It's right after "receiver volume".

Hope this helps!

program the set with a prime line that is a CO trunk, or use a line pool as the prime line.
Good luck.

If this is abasic set with no intercom buttons if you program for a pool or a trunk instead of internal dial tone on prime you will not be able to make internal calls dialing 9 is not the end of the world.

What Alex is saying if it's an ATA or an M7100. Out of luck.

You could build a route for your outbound digits. It would get a little messy, though, when you get to "2", or whatever the lead digit for your dn's is.

It is do-able, though.

Wait... DR5... What model system do you have?
