I need to upgrade to Windows 98 second edition - I have a disk, but how can I tell what edition it is? It is copyright 1991-1998 and the part number is X04-04214. Is there someplace on the disk where it tells the version, before I install?
Thanks, but what I need to know is what edition this new disk is. I don't want to install it if it is not second edition. I know that I have first edition on my computer now - how do I know if this new disk is first or second edition?
The main difference between the two as I understand it, is simply SE shipped with an updated library of drivers - the first edition was launched in a hurry and many companies didn't have time for their drivers to be included on the CD. If you update all your drivers, and update Windows fron Microsoft update, I don't think there will be any difference. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.
The disk it self should have the words SECOUND EDITION OR Windows98se on the label. Where as windows 98 does not"More Than Merely Names" YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN
Look at the date on the setup file at the root of the CD filestructure.
5-11-98 and 11-24-98 are originals
4-23-99 is SE
There may be others, but these are the ones I've seen across maybe 100 machines. Ed Fair
