Im installing SCO and using an IDE cd rom I just hooked up. When I get to choose media device, I choose IDE CDrom but it tells me to install a host adapter. HELP [sig][/sig]

Didn't mean to hurt your feelings. This is the place where the SCO answers will be found. Suspect you'll have someone on here shortly who can walk you through the install. I was hoping that AndyBo would get to you today. I'll try to help. What version of Open Server are you trying to install? I'll take one of my machines to the install point to see what might have gone wrong. I can parallel your install up to the formatting of the hard drive without problem on any version up to 5.0.6, which I hope you don't have. I'll check back in two or three hours for the answer, then another one to give some answers. Mis typed, up to 5.0.5. Started the install on 5.0.4 for testing purposes. When I reached boot: on the floppy, instead of enter and getting the SCSI stuff, I told it to &quot;restart&quot;. The system rebooted off the floppy, found the IDE controllers, and came up with a hardware list that included all devices on both IDE channels. Boot device was automatically selected as IDE CD-ROM.
Think this is the way you want to do it.
Suspect that you chose CD-ROM on your install, but it was a SCSI device. Will be following the thread tomorrow to see if your experience parallels mine.
And this is for 5.0.4. I don't know if 5.0.5 is the same. I'll check it tomorrow for education purposes. [sig]<p>Ed Fair<br><a href=mailto: efair@atlnet.com> efair@atlnet.com</a><br><a href= > </a><br>Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. <br>

The only time I've seen a problem like this was a couple of years ago with the early UnixWare 2.1 releases. At the time, if you had what SCO might consider a &quot;bleeding edge&quot; SCSI card (ie, less than 12 months old ;^) driving the CD-ROM, you had to get a PTF and generate a new driver disk that would be loaded before going into the main installation routine.

Have you tried Ed's suggestion yet? If you have, and things still aren't working, you could try &quot;Andy's Hardware Check #1&quot; ;^) Get a hold of one of the &quot;Linux on a Floppy&quot; distributions. Tom's Root & Boot is good ( Use it to boot the server and see if it picks up your CD-ROM. If it doesn't, then you probably have a physical connection problem, dead drive, etc.

If the Linux boot disk finds the CD drive OK, try going through the SCO install again. If things still fail, double check the SCO Hardware Compatability Guide and make sure that your particular drive is supported. The install routine may be refusing to pick up your CD-ROM drive because the ID string returned from it isn't in it's list of supported drives.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on [sig]<p> Andy Bold<br><a href=mailto: > </a><br><a href= > </a><br>"I've probably made most of the mistakes already, so hopefully you won't have to..." Me, most days.[/sig]

Good morning AndyBo. Glad to see you're still alive and well.

With 5.0.5, Install finds the cd-rom without the restart but there appears to be a glitch in loading the driver. But this also might be a problem with my boot floppy as it is a copy, not the original. And I haven't tried the restart to force the boot to search harder. So I'll wait for Saedyn to respond fefore trying any further. Previous message indicated that 5.0.5 found the hardware. WRONG. It found a zip drive at Primary, slave and assigned it to tape and cd-rom. Made the address change in media select to Secondary, master and everything cranked up correctly. But 5.0.5 does something to my HP R/W that requires a power cycle to clear, where 5.0.4 didn't. So I think we have some answers of Saedyn. Im not sure what was going on but in the BIOS the IDE Secondary Master and Slave PIO were set to Mode 0. I changed them to auto and started the installation over. This time the IDE Cdrom was automatically selected. But now, a ways further into the install I am getting &quot;Panic k_trap -double fault trap type 0x00000008&quot; Im not sure what this either. How about a list of the hardware you are trying to load the OS onto. Also the version you are trying to load. I've never seen this error message, perhaps someone else has. But knowing what OS and what hardware will be a start.
And SCO has a support site that has some troubleshooting info for surfing. Think I've seen the panic traps mentioned. SCO is also the place you go to get your OS patches. Im installing 5.0.5 on an old HP. Im not sure about the model because it has no writing on it. It is kind of cool though because it has its own screen on the box. It has a 133mhz MMX on a motherboard that fits into a ISA slot with a PCI slot on the end(not sure what the name of that is). Ive tried but they don't have anything on that specific k_trap error. How much memory? And be aware that you can be running into some hardware specific problems. The video in particular may be a problem. Do you have capability of installing alternate video controller?

96 Megs. I do have plenty video cards and I'll try that after I try a new hard drive. I'll let you know. [sig][/sig]
