How do I get rid of the Lovegate virus/worm?

I have gone to the McAffee site and downloaded Avert Stinger and W32/Lovegate.a@M . Both seem to work but Lovegate keeps coming back.
I am very careful about openning email. I only open email from people I know.
I also rum the AVG anti virus program also "heals" the files.
I also re-installed Windows 2000 Pro.
Is there a better way?
