Hello,
Once again into a new area for me. I am new at this and have inherited this LAN. This is a small school getting bigger so I need to enlarge our existing scope. I was told I could just modify the existing one but I see that the subnet mask is greyed out with no way to change it that I can see. Our present scope is 169.254.1.60 to 169.254.1.254
with a subnet mask of 255.255.254.0. I had changed the IP range before in order to reserve the first 60 ips for static. I want to move to a class B just to be done with ever running out of IP's. So I wanted the change the range ot 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.63.254 with a subnet of 255.255.192.0. I would also have to figure out how to exclude the above 169.254.1.1 to 169.254.1.59 for reservations of static IP's. How can I do this or do I have to delete the scope and start over and just remember make a list of reservations to add back.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Thanks
Todd

Our present scope is 169.254.1.60 to 169.254.1.254
Whenever you see 169.254.x.x, this means Windows is automatically handing out your ip addresses, and the scope will always stay the same. How is your network set-up? Using dhcp, dns, wins etc? Good luck.

In that case you should propably create a new scope with IP,s you mentioned. By this way you should also to be able to change Subnet mask. Slect DHCP and -->new scope ( if I remember that right ).

We are using DHCP and DNS but not WINS since we are all win2k or xp pro. I inherited this LAN and I believe that in transition from NT to Win2k Active Directory and DHCP, that the administrator decided to keep the 169.254.1.0 numbers instead of switching to a 192 series. The 169.254.1.0 is in the DHCP and if a new computer enters the LAN, it assigns a new 169.254.1.? number to it. My problem is the LAN is increasing and I need to expand the scope. I only have 20 numbers not used with 40 plus computers being ordered. I was hoping I could just change the properties of the old scope and change it to a class B but the subnet mask is greyed out and therefore I can't change it. I was mostly wondering if it greyed out after the scope is created or was I missing something to ungrey ita. As 3143 stated, I suppose I could delete the existing scope and create a new one, re-do my reservations, and all should be well.
Thanks to Both of you for your response.

I just had the same issue...and yes...you must delete it first, and then re-create the scope. Just note any reservations and scope options.

Speaktek,
Thanks so much. I will do that.
