How do I create an autoresponder with PHP?

I need my PHP script to be able to recieve emails at something@mydomain.com and then reply to them with a pre-defined message.

I see programs online that do this all of the time.

I just need to know how to make one.

I have my site hosted on Red Hat Linux.
I'm not sure what MTA is.
