A user mistakenly named the computer XY77 when it's supposed to be XY79. The laptop took this also as the computer domain. We were able to change the computer name to XY79 but it still says XY77 as the domain. How do we change it?
Need help ASAP!

Thanks!

Right click on My computer and go to properties, Then go to Network Identification, click on Properties. In MEMBER OF at the bottom make sure the Domain radio button is clicked and TYPE in the domain you want to be part of. AS A NOTE only an administrator can add a computer to a domain.

Hope this helps.

You will have to use dcpromo and back the domain controller to a member server. Rename host and run dcpromo again to rename the domain. If you have any other domain controllers in the same domain, they must be made member servers first. This is the only way.

I apologize I misread the question. I did not realize this was a DC you were trying to change the domain on. Pilot1 has a good way of doing it for Domain Controllers.

I have a domain with a PDC and two BDC's. I recently upgraded the PDC to 2000 and gave it a dns style domain name for the active directory. Can I demote this server and then re-promote it and rename the active directory?

thanks

Demote pdc to bdc and promote bdc to pdc.Take ex-pdc offline and do changes. Then turnback ex-pdc and return it to pdc. This should work in mixed-mode enviroment. Sleew
