how can I tell what version of SQL Server is running? Isn't there a stored procedure?

This will give you some better info if you are running SQL 2000.
Code:
SELECT 'SQL Server '
+ CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('productversion') AS VARCHAR) + ' - '
+ CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('productlevel') AS VARCHAR) + ' ('
+ CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('edition') AS VARCHAR) + ')'
