Beleive it or not.....of all things NOT to have any backward compatibility, XP does not offer support for restoring files you may have backed up using Windows 98.

Is anyone aware of any shareware available to do this? There's gotta be a practical way to do this!

The best Microsoft had to offer was to uninstall XP / reinstall Win 98 / restore the files / use file settings transfer wizard that comes with xp to back the files up again / then reinstall xp to restore the files. How's that for thinking of / putting your customers first!

We're talking about *.qic files. I don't know of any such utility. The best thing is to use a 98 machine (a friend's maybe) to pick and choose what your want to restore, copy them to a cd and carry the cd to the xp machine.

Thanks Smah.....That's what I'll try to do. Just frustratred with all the hype wrt Windows XP making our lives so much easier.....and the basic process of upgrading can be a major challenge if one is not careful.

Don't get me wrong....I like it for the most part but getting things back to normal has been interesting to say the least!

Thanks Linney. I tried both options but neither worked. The first installed and ran OK....but would not recognize my zip drive....only the A:\ drive.

The second (Stomp Backup Program) didn't recognize the QIC file format.

Thanks anyway.... I still can't believe Microsoft doesn't offer such a utility!!!!!!

hi togahi,

I had the same problem, ok, that's not wat you want to hear. But I think I found something for you. It's a software called 'BackUp MyPC'. It's a 30days free trial version and it run's under win xp. I had a .qic-file created under win 98 and no problems to resore my files to win xp!

Try the following site

or download from download.com

seggi,

Thanks for the suggestion but consistent with my luck, when I download the free download, it tells me I have 0 days left and won't open up.

Thanks for trying anyways
