I have win 98 and want to stop cafee from using my task scheduler ... each time I turn it off in the Mcafee program, the program restarts it .... Mcafee has two uses for the task scheduler. the one that I want to turn off is the one that uses task scheduler to go to Mcafee and check for new updates while I am on line. This function is not the automatic update function .. that function can be turned off. This check locks up and slows my cpu.

I don't use Mcafee but, is it using the Windows Task Scheduler? Or its own sheduler like Norton used to have? If it is the Windows scheduler go into the control panel or the start menu under system tools and look for the task associated with mcafee. Right click on it and choose properties, in there is a check box to enable or disable the task. I would disable it, not delete it because mcafee might just put it back in there.

Im not sure but do you mean a Task\Process that sits in the system tray on the bottom right hand corner on your start bar?

You can disable processes and tasks that load on startup by:

Going to START > RUN

Type msconfig

On the "Startup" tab uncheck a box that relates to mcafee updates?

I don't want to undermine your terminology of Windows but it is only a suggestion

Thanks

Thanks for the input, BUT -- I have tried both. Been through selective startup, ms config, regedit .... mcafee insists on using windows task scheduler. the search that it does when I am online, slows and will even freeze AOL.

I can ( and do ) turn off task scheduler each time I start up, but my kids cant do that when they go on line ... and it causes a problem for them.

Did you do what I suggested? Go into Scheduled Tasks and disable the mcafee task. Do not delete it, just right click on it and choose properties. On the first page there is a check box to enable\disable. Uncheck this box and it will not run any more.
