How can I install Sp1a on XP?

I have the task of 'fixing' this laptop with XP home. Ran Adaware, Spybot S&D, Spysweeper, locally installed up2date Norton. Cleaned a bunch.

Still got the popups related to coolweb so I ran the shredder and also ran housecall from another system to the shared C.

I then realized that this system isn't on Sp1 so I downloaded it.

Now I get "c:\windows\system32\msvidctl.dll is open or in use by another application..." . I get this in safe mode as well.

How can I install SP1a?

This is a library file for MS Video Control, you need this if you have a tv tuner. If you don't try unregistering the file, regsvr32 /u c:\windows\system32\msvidctl.dll

You can always register the file later.

If you do have a video card, try removing your drivers through add/remove programs, load sp1, then reinstall the drivers.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Nothing worked. I just reinstalled the OS and all updates.

It's weird because I (a seasoned Windows trooper) know that there was a virus and a spyware program on there.
I had quite a few SVCHOST processes (at least 8) and coolweb generators.

Ad-aware, spybot S&D, spysweeper, xoftspy, coolweb washer, all said were clean.

Locally installed and updated Norton said was clean and this system scanned from the shared root of c said that the system was clean.

Remove from network and bookmarker.gen trojan pops up. Manually look for evidence in registry and filesystem per Symantec and it doesn't exist.


Well, it doesn't matter anymore, it's done.
