I have a laptop with a limping windows 98. It maybe the h/d or the o/s. I have a replacement h/d which I will install a clean o/s. Now I don't know too much about this, so bear with me... I need to copy stuff like dial up settings, passwords, email settings (pop3) and all the data. Basically make the new hard drive like the old one.
Now, like I said, the o/s is messed up. I wanted to run Back Up, but it's not there. I did go to the control panel/add remove... and check back up, but there is nothing in the Start/Programs list. I saw somthing about xcopy?????? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance

Try this for starters...

Thank you. That post lead me to others and to others until I think I found something well suited! I discovered that on the EZ CD Creator software that I have (Roxio I think) has "Take Two" which says it'll copy the entire hard drive onto c/ds. Sounds good! we'll see!
Thanks for the help, a star for you! :-)

Hope you're sorted - but was a bit concerned by
'Basically make the new hard drive like the old one.

So copying old to new will probably just continue your problems?
Yes - back up your data to CD. But make a note of all you passwords/settings, make sure you have drivers you need and reinstall win98 from scratch on new drive. You can import email from the backup, and reinstall apps. Yes it will take longer, but hopefully get you a working machine at the end of it.

Hee hee!
Well, I'm not sorted at all! My system is degrading too fast and is loosing data, it's kinda funyy to see. I guess I have to accept the fact that I am going to loose data, but I'm sure I'll make it through :-)
Is there a cable I can buy that'll enable me to hook up 2 hard drivesz at the same time? Then I could at least copy in dos from one to the other?
Thanks guys!

Hi coolcarls,

Hook up another hard drive on the same IDE cable as your original hard drive. Make sure that you set the jumper so that the second hard drive will become the slave. You should then be able to copy all your data onto the new drive.

Hope this helps you out.

Most IDE cables allow 2 drives to be connected, one as master and the other as slave. If you don't have that kind of cable you can easily get one they don't cost that much... If your data is corrupted, copying it to a new drive and then importing it to a new system once you get a clean install might just continue the problem. unless it's REALLY important I'd just ditch it. Your call though... not enough free space to delete file...delete one or more files and try again...(real error message)

Are these cables available for laptops?
Thanks to all for the great advise!

Laptops usually have only one drive set as master and there is no cable, it just plugs into a socket inside the laptop. I've never seen a drive cable for a laptop. not enough free space to delete file...delete one or more files and try again...(real error message)

Another option to look into is to purchasse an external hard drive. That way you don't need to fuss with trying to create a bunch of CD's each time you need to save data or reload your system. I recommend them to my clients with laptops. Enkrypted
A+

Thanks Enkrypted
That's exactly what I have to do!
