/ is at 98% and I can't find anything to delete without other filesystems (/tmp /var /usr etcetera....) getting in the way

How do I found what is just relevant to / filesystem

You can use
du -x /
to show you what is in / and its size.

Is /var a filesystem of its own, or part of /?

Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks - make sure most are the former.
