I had a hard drive fail this weekend. We are Raid 5 so the server stayed up and running. Ordered (2) hot swappable drives that will be in this afternoon (one is for a spare). Server is Compaq Proliant DL380- 5300 Smart Array Controller with Raid 5 - 3 hard drives. Netware 6 sp 3.

Is there anything with the Novell I have do first before inserting the new drive? The failed drive has been removed from the server.

Thanks,

jane

No, just pull the failed disk and push the new disk in and the server will restripe onto the new disk. It is advisable to perform this when the server is less busy though (out of hours).

Are you putting drive#2 in as a hotspare or just sitting on the side incase of another failure? If hotspare, I would wait till the RAID is back to 100% before adding the hotspare.
