Hi,

Is it possible to host websites if I have an ADSL connection to the Internet that assigns me a dynamic IP address (everytime I reconnect, which is not often - only when my connection gets broken). Is there anyway around this constraint, cos getting a static IP plan is too expensive for me now. Bandwidth is not an issue for me...it's the fact that I don't have a static IP.

Thanks for the help.

For websites to be resolved to your hosted IP address, they must be available to the general public through DNS.
Most ISP's are not really keen on you hosting websites, so you may need to read your DSL agreement. That's why they are reluctant to give you a fixed IP.
The best option is to pay a couple of bucks a month for a fixed IP if possible. If that is not an option here is what you have to look into...

1: Dynamic DNS; This will get you an alias (or Aliases) that is managed by the DNS provider, when your IP changes, they dynamically take care of translating it to your new addy. This option is the most painless, but comes at a price. see for more info.

2: Use a DNS provider that you can update the IP yourself via a HTTP interface. This gives you complete control over creating your own sub domains, & mail pointers etc. This option is NOT dynamic meaning that YOU will have to recognise when the IP has been changed, Log into the provider, and make the necessary change. All your hosted sites will be unavailable for up to 4 hours (Depending on the DNS providers TTL) when the change gets replicated up to the root DNS servers servicing the internet. This option is the most configurable, but it depends on how often your ISP gives your IP the whammy... for this, check out a provider like I have found them to be reliable, affordable, and easy to use.

Hope this helps
