A friend of mine has setup a home network. Here is how it is setup. The DSL line comes to the DSL router. From the DSL router there is a cable connected to a Netgear 802.11b Wireless hub. Then there is a cable connected from the hub to a windows XP PC. Then there is a laptop he is trying to connect to the wireless hub. The laptop can connect to the internet, but it doesn’t see the PC. What is he missing? What does he have to do to see his computer?

There is also a printer connected to the PC. He also wants to print to that printer from His laptop, what does he have to do to print from his laptop?

Run the Desktop PC thru the "Home Networking" Wizard.
This will establish a "network" visible to the notebook.
Look thru the "Help" for keyword 'networking' and you should
see a section for "...establishing a home network".

I have a similiar problem, except I have both computers hard wired into the router. I have had file sharing working before I rebuilt my computer. I have a desktop and a laptop. Both are running XP Pro. I can ping both machines from each other. They get their addresses through DHCP on the router.

I have enabled Simple File Sharing, and even used the build in Networking Wizard. I have also renamed the workgroup on both computers just in case it didn't like "WORKGROUP"!!

I have a shared folder on each computer: laptop one is called Backup, and desktop one is called Documents.

When I go to My Network Places and Click on View Workgroup Computers, NOTHING!

If, however, I use the IP address backslash sharename from the laptop, I can see the shared folder on teh desktop. I cannot do the reverse, ie, from desktop to laptop. It gives me the message that \\192.168.1.35\backup is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource, et.c, et.c.

Pertaining to this, I have right-clicked the backup folder on the laptop and given FULL ACCESS permission to ALL users for this folder.

WHAT am I missing here????? HELP!

I have just done some research and have found a few answers that might solve the problem. It has solved mine!
Firstly there is something called NetBIOS over TCP/IP, which is probably related to the visibility of the share.

To check whether this is enabled, go to the properties of the network connection. Under General, D-click on Internet Protocol. Under General, click on Advanced at the bottom. Then click on the WINS Tab. At the bottom of this, make sure the middle option, which is Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, is selected. OK/Apply your way out.

Micro$oft also says to check whether the Computer Browser Service is running, but I'm sure that on 99.9% it is. This is done in Control Panel/ Administrative Tools/ Services.

Now try browsing the network for your share.

I found the problem. The problem was, the firewalls were enabled. I disabled the firewalls and it works fine.
Thank you for your help.
