Enhancements over 1.97.7
* Added 50 new Registry values to scan for IE!
* Added status text during scan.
* Added a ton of new files to the LSP whitelist (missing imon.dll shouldn't show anymore as well).
* Support for non-US character sets (Japanese, Traditional/Simplified Chinese and Korean)!
* Fixed a bug where R3 entries ending in '}_' weren't fixed.
* Backups are now placed in a seperate folder labelled 'backups'.
* Improved detection of O4 Registry autoruns, RunServicesOnce key is now also checked.
* Fixed a possible catastrophic bug in fixing of F2 Userinit entries (incorrect backup restore).
* Added small process manager and hosts file editor (Misc Tools).
* Disabled routine to fix O10 items, since this can break the Winsock LSP stack.

I had need to use the new version of HijackThis yesterday and found in it some bugs which I have reported to the software developers, ranging from minor to quite serious.
I can only recommend if you are doing work with customer/client machines to stick with 1.97.7 for now unless you feel confident in using the new version.

Has anybody else had such problems?

John

I haven't used it a lot yet (about three times so far), but have yet to run into any problems. What sort of bugs have you noticed?

1. The textbox not resizing properly when the main HijackThis window is resized. It worked in the old version.

2. Bizarre error messages such as:
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modRegistry_IniGetString(sFile=system.ini, sSection=boot, sValue=Shell)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [email address], reporting the following:
* What you were doing when the error occurred
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot I like about it, particularly the ability to correctly restore backups, but this sort of problem means I don't feel confident asking an end user to run it and mail me the log.

Interesting.
I'm not getting the problem when resizing.
What OS's have you tried it on?
Admittedly, to this point I've only used it on Win98 machines.

I take it that the error message you posted above resulted from a removal attempt?

If you want a good laugh, have you read the "Are you sure...?" pop-up that accompanies a Delete All selection in the Backup area?

That particular message came up on an XP Home box, it was during the scanning.
I've only tried it on XP Home and 2K Pro to date, not with Win98 at all.

I've also just found that the detection of running from a temp folder feature is broken. Try this: Put a copy of HijackThis in C:\Program Files\HijackThis and run it, then close. Put a second copy in the root of the drive and run that - do you get the message about it running from a temp folder?

If you are in spywareinfo boot camp you can check out a discussion there. I cant post a link because it's not a public section.

It's 10 O'Clock ( somewhere! ).
Are your registry and data backed up?

jrbarnett,

I do get the message that you refer to.
Though, after clicking through the message, it appears to function normally.
Interesting.
