Can anybody tell me why my soundcard has suddenly started whining at me? :)

Basically, it was working fine until about a week ago. I installed Rogue Spear onto the computer, and after a few minutes play, the game-sound went, and I was left with a high-pitched (and very loud) whine. It also now happens on several other games, such as Thief II and Desperados (demo). It does NOT, however, happen on SWAT3 or the Operation Flashpoint demo.

My theory is that it's something to do with DirectX 8, or something that Rogue Spear has installed.

My set-up is as follows:

AMD Athlon 1GHz
320Mb RAM
SBLive 1024 (latest drivers, I think!)
Voodoo3 3000 (AGP) (latest drivers)
Windows 98
DirectX 8.0

Before I format my HD to try to clear the problem (which I'm sure you'll all agree is a complete pain in the a*se), does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

Make sure that you have DirectX 8a, I heard that alot of people had problems with the first run of DX8.

i believe thats why 8.0a came out So long and thanks for all the fish.

I had a look on MS's page yesterday, and the DirectX 8.0a driver download file is exactly the same as the one on the coverdisk that I installed from (same filename). I'm assuming then that I have DX8a installed. I think I'll try downloading it anyway, because it only refers to it as DirectX 8.0 on the coverdisk.

to find out got to start run and type dxdiag that will tell you. So long and thanks for all the fish.
