When I play a music file or watch a streaming video the voice is a higher pitch. It sounds like everyone just inhaled helium. I have tried using different speakers, media players and have tried to adjust the equilizer.
I have tried to reinstall the drivers and that doesnt work.
Anyone have any ideas?

Does your sound card have any software that was installed? It may have been some sort of effect that is turned on. I had that problem with an echo on a Soundblaster before. I turned it off and it would keep coming back.

no it doesnt have any extra software. Its sporadic too. Right now it doesnt sound high pitch but it comes back.

It means the hamsters need a new wheel in the PC. :)
i'm glad someone else put this in first. my first thought was to take your foot off the cat's tail.

i couldn't resist. sometimes these threads get a little dry - a little humour often helps.

reverting to the technical: if the voices are at a higher pitch, are they speaking faster? if so, is the vid in synch (i.e., has the motion speeded up)? i have never experienced this, so i have no fixes, but am trying to narrow the criteria.

I dont think the video is faster its just the voices are higher. Plus this doesnt just happen with videos. If im playing a song the song will be at a higher pitch. for example a man will sound like a woman.

have you watched/listened to these files on another computer? if so, is the affect the same? if so, it is the files themselves that have problem. if not then it is your computer and ... good luck.

also is it the same with all multimedia files?

what is your o/s? can you run a repair install (win2k)?

i guess fixing this may depend on how important viewing/listening is. if it is really important and you cannot run a repair install, you may need a clean re-install.

i really hope someone else has a better solution.

We've run into this problem here frequently with Dell Optiplex GX-50s. It seems the audio driver gets corrupted somehow and when we reinstall the driver from Dell, the audio works again the way it should. Try re-installing the driver or downloading an updated driver from the manufacturer.
