I replaced a system board in a Dell SX280 and now I have a amber solid power light and also one of the fans seemed to be very high..Pls give me some input to what could be the problem.

solid amber indicates an internal power problem
source: Dell

1.) I would first RESET/CLEAR the CMOS, go into the BIOS Setup, load default values, and Exit&Save...

2.) check all connectors for proper seating...

3.) if you have a chance try another PSU...

4.) Contact Dell and see what they suggest... I am not a Dell Tech, so can only give advice as to how I would go about troubleshooting...

You mean you have one of the 4 lights on the back of some Dells that is amber - like 1 out of 4 is amber and the others are green. If that's the case, you can look up that error code on Dell's site.

My guess is that the motherboard THINKS the fan is not working and the fan is running full speed because the motherboard is not "seeing" it and telling it what speed to run at. That's a WAG.

goombawaho makes a good point, I think. Are you sure the fan is connected correcly? If it has a 3 pin fan connection, it should be connected direct to the motherboard if possible, not through an adapter to a 4-pin Molex. Or if it isn't possible to connect that way, you should be able to turn off fan detection in the BIOS.

Thanks for the input..however, the solid amber light is on the front of the box and this is a mini tower with the power supply intergrated on the system board. I had already tried reseating the fan, also, I don't know if this may make a difference..but,I did not use the compound for the heatsink and also did not swap the CMOS battery...

Do you think this may be the problem?? Any other suggestions??

The highlighted part is definitely a problem, whether it is causing the amber light or not. Get some paste in there - go buy some Artic Silver 5 if you can. [smile]
