High CPU Usage

The CPU usage is running around 60%-100%. I checked the processes and found the image name "NTVDM.EXE" is taking most of the load. I never noticed that before. Does anyone know what the file is used for? My System Idle Process is taking up allot also. Any ideas?

NTVDM.EXE is NT's Virtual DOS Machine. It runs when you run a cmd prompt, a DOS app or a Windows 16-bit app (which will also spawn a WOWEXEC process).

Judging from the amount your CPU is tied up, I'd suspect you're running a DOS-based app of some sort. You can use DOSKBD to stop the DOS app from polling so frequently if this is the case.

With regards to the System Idle process, a processor needs to be doing something all the time, it cannot be totally idle, therefore the idle process was created

Straight from the horses mouth;

System Idle Process - You cannot end this process from Task Manager.
This process is a single thread running on each processor, which has the sole task of accounting for processor time when the system isn't processing other threads. In Task Manager, expect this process to account for the majority of processor time.

We had this issue where I used to work, if you go into the system processes, this will be eating up most of your system. There is no way I know of not to have this running unless you get rid of the DOS or 16 bit app running on the server. Of course that's easier said then done. Mike Brown CCA

I am running a DOS interface on the server. Thank you for the tips. I never have noticed the high CPU use before. Thanks again for the help.

I too am experiencing high cpu usage. The process, other than the system idle process, that is eating up a lot of processor time is the System process. Anyone know what uses the system process?

By the way, let me mention that we have a dos application that runs across the network. This is the only application that seems to be impacted by the high cpu usage.
