Hi-
Maybe someone can help on something that is very irritating!
My machine won't record the logon cookie from tek-tips - if I tell it to save it it says that it has - but the next time I try to login I have to do it all over again. I have cookie handling set to Medium in IE, and tek-tips is a listed site 'always allow' as well - but it doesn't work! It's driving me nuts as it works fine on my laptop with ME and cookies set to Medium (tek-tips isn't listed on the laptop as it works fine without)

Check to see if the folder that contains cookies has not become read only.

Also check to see if the cookie already exists. If it does it may have become corrupted and will not allow IE to replace it. If so delete it and try again.

By the way the folder that contains the cookie will be
c:\documents and setting\YourUserName\cookies

and the file name will be

YourUserName@www.tek-tips[1].txt

i.e.
Mine is
administrator@www.tek-tips[1].txt

Hope it helps

Thanks for the reply. Well, the folder was set to read only, there were however cookies in the folder from other sites - not tek-tips. I changed it from read only and logged in again. Now it wrote a cookie - but not to my complete user name - I get a file called kim@www.tek-tips[1].txt but my user name is actually kimleece - and it didn't work - so I am still a bit mystified as now I also wonder how some sites managed to write cookies to my folder even when it was set to read only?!? (I also tried renaming the file to kimleece@www.tek-tips[1].txt and that didn't work either!)

Any more ideas - or am I just being stupid and missing something?

Hi-
I have just noticed that even though I clear the check and press apply to make the folder NOT read only, as soon as I then press ok and exit the folder properties, if I go back to the folder properties again, the read only box is again checked!!!

Yeah thats a Windows Xp Default. Try deleting the cookie that you have from Tek-Tips and then log in to tek-tips again just to make sure that it is still creating a Kim and not kimleece.

If that does not work while in internet explorer click on Tools and the internet options.

Click on Security Tab and then click on Custom Level.

Scroll Right down to the bottom of the dialog it displays and then let me know what option is set in the User Authenication section.

Hi-
That setting is -'automatic logon only in Intranet zone'

Hi,
bcastner - this link seems to be about losing cookies during an upgrade to IE6 from an earlier version. My problem is that cookies from tek-tips that are being written to my cookie folder do not automatically log me in now. Now matter what I do I always have to go through the login screen (although the screen remembers my password when I enter the user name). One thing that seems strange is that I cannot reset the cookie folder to clear the read only checkbox as gpalmer711 suggested in an above post - it seems to go at first, and then reappears again the next time I look at the properties of the folder.

I would love to know why this is happening!

The read-only qwirk that you are getting is a security measure that Microsoft incorperated into its operating system. Don't worry about it.

As far as your cookies go I cannot think of anything else that would cause this.

You can reset the read-only attribute from a .cmd session, but as gpalmer noted it is unlikely the source of the cookie issue:

My earlier note was not in substance about updates losing cookies, but a reminder that cookie security is handled primarily as a privacy issue and not a security issue with IE 6; and that both tabs in Internet Options need to be examined to permit the cookie.

Hi,
First I would like to say thank you for your time and input.
I have now tried to reset BOTH security and privacy to their lowest settings - accept all cookies - deleted all the cookies - logged in to write a new one - exited IE - checked the cookie was there - restarted IE - and still have to login again. This one appears to be really hard!!!
I am beginning to think that maybe my IE has some corrupt file somewhere and am thinking about re-installing the whole program to check. As I said in an earlier post though - it works fine under ME.

I have found the problem!!! It was because of the link in my Favourites! I must have added this link before I saved the first cookie - and the link took me to the login page. When I used the address bar and typed the address in again it worked! Now I have updated the link in Favourites and it works fine with security and privacy set to default - great.

Again - thank you both for your help.

Glad you managed to sort it out.
