Hi All,

I have encountered a problem while trying to install Windows 2000 pro. The computer runs through the intial part of the setup and then shuts down for the first time. After restart I get a choice between booting from Win 98 (my current OS) and 2000 setup. I select the setup option, a blue screen appears and a message is displayed stating insert the Windows 2000 pro disk into the cdrom drive to continue, problem being the CD is already in the cdrom and it will not read the disk or allow me to continue. Can somebody please help???

There are a few ways to do this

Id advise running setup again using this this command line switch

winnt /tempdrive: x:

(Where x is the drive you are installing to)

Also try this

winnt /s: x:

(where x: is your cd rom drive)

Or finally and probably even easier, copy the i386 folder to the drive you are installing from and run setup from there. Boot from a start up disk and browse to the folder and start it from there.

Let me know how you get on

Hi Rathcoffey,

Thanks for the reply, I just want to make sure that I understand exactly what you are suggesting, please correct me if I am wrong.

I am guessing there is a folder called i386 on the Win 2000 pro CD, which I will copy to my c: drive. Then boot with a Win98 startup, change directory to this folder and run the setup program from there. Is this correct??

Yep you got it in one......I should have detailed where the i386 folder was.

Best of luck

Hi rathcoffey,

Your tip worked perfect thank you very much. I now have a new problem that I am hoping you might be able to help me out with. I upgraded 2000 pro from 98 SE, all of my files and programs are intact and present but it is as if they all have been erased out of the registry. I can't run most of them and they don't appear in the Add/Remove Programs to uninstall them. I am a little hesitant on just deleting the folders in case they were still somehow present in the registry. Do you know what is going on here and if so please lend me some of your expertise.

Thank You very much,
gkprogrammer
