Hi All,

Can some give me a few clues on where I can get a good deal on a computer running win98. I checked pricewatch but there are so many vendors listed it is hard for me to tell which company is good and which I really don't want to deal with. I am looking for a 700-900 mhz new computer running win98.

Thanks for any ideas that you might have.
Stephen

Look through your yellow pages and find any computer surplus stores. usually all the larger centers have them. you can get good computers for cheap dollars.

Where are U?
I can advise on UK. Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

I'd strongly suggest you avoid buying a system from an online vendor. Some things are ok to buy online but PCs are not one of them. You may find really good prices, but if you have problems with it you may find that the place you bought it from ignores you. Find a place you can drive to in case they decide they aren't going to listen to you.

You can probably go to Best Buy and buy a Celeron 800 - 1.2 Gig for $400.00 - $600.00.

They sell some clearance stuff on from companies like gateway, IBM, Dell, E-Machines.

I think E-Machines may have some older celerons they sell.

The hard part is getting the Win98 Oper System. You might buy that someplace like Ebay or some auction place. Could be someone has win98 they might sell if you ask people you know who have recently bought a computer. They might still sell the win98 upgrade somewhere online but I doubt it.

Avoid buying WinME!

You can build a computer with a PIII/Celeron motherboard and a Celeron 1.2 - 800 processor pretty cheap.
I just built a computer with an Asus TUSL2-C PIII motherboard and a 1.2 Gig boxed Celeron from The board and the processor/cooler/fan only ran me about $225 plus shipping. The Celeron Processors just had a price drop since then. I added an $18.00 Sound card, a $50.00 VisionteK Xstacy Geforce2 and a $8.00 Enermax Case Fan from This system plays the latest games and never crashes. I used old PC100 memory and an old case to save money. The motherboard takes the PC133 memory also.
By using an older PIII board you can buy a cheaper case with a cheaper powersupply. The case and Processor will not heat up as much either. Cost around $499-$600.

The result is you can probably beat the cost by going to Best Buy and buying a brand new E-Machine or get a clearance computer online. At best buy the price for a 1 Gig celeron E-machine $479.00 before the $75.00 Rebate (No Monitor). You can purchase this online or walk-in. They sell everything with WinXP now however. All of the Clearance computers I could find had WinME. But most of them were about the same price. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the replies. But I am still very confused about where to buy. I am going to be selling this system for a small profit. I will make the bulk of the profit setting up the new computer and transfering the customers info from their old computer. I am thinking about using the following site. Has anybody ever delt with them?

Thanks
Stephen

1) I have seen Win98 at Best Buy recently, if you decide to just buy a used system without it and want to add it.
2) ChrisC's point makes sense to me, too.
Of course, four years ago I brought my computer in to a small local shop, shook hands, and when I went back the next week they were gone.
I investigated ownership, took them to Small Claims Court, and then this guy declared bankruptcy!!! Unbelievable!!!
No reimbursement - no computer!!!
Then I decided I liked the problems I have better than the problems HE had, and went (to BestB) and got a new one <grin> .............. Whatever help THAT might be (?)LOL JMikl K
