Hi All,

Are there people participating in this forum who run FreeBSD
4.7 or higher on SuperMicro Superservers ?

I want to buy a Superserver system to run FreeBSD and cannot
make up my mind as to what to buy.

Supermicro's tech support seems to be more confident
about Linux compatibility with their older Pentium III based Superserver systems, seems like they did not test FreeBSD at all and just rely on their customers' feedback.

I need this server to be very stable, however I am somewhat
reluctant to buy a Pentium III based system after Pentium 4 has been out there for about 2 years now.

Please share your experience (if you have any) of running Linux on SuperMicro's Superservers. I'd appreciate, if you
could provide a detailed spec of your hardware system and list issues and problems you have run into if any.
Please specify what version of Linux you are using.

One more question: I've heard from some people that allegedly Pentium III based servers work... faster than those based on Pentium IV. CAN THIS BE TRUE ?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE !

I've ran FreeBSD on their p3's and p4's and it's been fine. However, I wouldn't run linux (or linux compat) if you paid me so I can't help you with your linux question.

I am currently running FreeBSD 4.7 successfully on several SuperMicro P4 servers. Everything works fine.

As for linux, in the past we used the same servers to run linux. Everything worked fine but I would recommend either compiling the kernel from source (distributions are messy) or just drop linux and load FreeBSD (way better).

Good luck,

Marc
