My friend runs a windows 2000 server. Seems he has to have a floppy inserted into the floppy drive when he reboots the machine otherwise the machine will not allow him to boot.
The floppy contents are 3 files namely boot.ini,ntldr,ntdetect.com.

In the past he already had another server with IDE disk and then somebody did a ghost of the contents and ported it to SCSI drive in the w2k server. I am not able to figure out what he is saying..could somebody tell what would have happened and whats the resolution.

I think he needs to edit the boot.ini file on the HDD C:it will look somting like this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

the problem is if he ghosted a ide disk and installed 2k on SCSI disk then the above path is incorrect.
Copy the disk version of boot.ini and hopefully that will sort it out.

make a backup of the old boot.ini first just in case

below I have posted my 2 boot.ini files

floppy boot.ini

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

my HDD c:\boot.ini contents

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Server" /fastdetect

only differebce is in last line ..i.e one is 2000 professional and other is 2000 server.

any ideas..?

Without the floppy in what happens? What error do you get?

I would boot off the cd and see if the hard drive is recognized. Maybe it is an MBR problem? Try running a chkdisk.
