I have a work station running W2K Pro SP-1, Ibm 300gl, 433 Celoron, 128mb ram, 15gb hdd.

Problem: System running very slow because SERVICES.exe is utilizing 100% of the CPU. Not sure why this is happening.

There is nothing in startup, no games or any other stuff like that. Just a work station, only programs that are on it is MS Office 2000.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Does anyone know of a fix...

Thanks in advance..

Any messages in Event Viewer indicating a possible problem? Could try applying SP2 or 3.

Just suggestions - I don't know what's causing your problem.

why don't you run the services snap-in and have a go at removing each one in turn. it's a bit of a hack and your system might become unstable. you can get to the services snap in by running services.msc in the run box in the start menu.

services that appear as services.exe include dhcp, dns client, messenger and plug and play support. if you need more info about what is running use tlist in your command prompt. you may need to install this from your windows cd.

Thank you for your replies, I really do appreciate them.

In the course of troubleshooting the problem, I found that the log files in the event viewer were set to clear manually and because of this they had become full to the point of corruption. After clearing these logs and resetting them to overwrite as needed all is well...Services.exe is no longer eating up my cpu time..

Once again, Thanks Guys and I hope this bit of info will help someone else with a similar problem.
