Got a problem. Server is Nt4 SP6, and have just bought 2 new machines to put on our network. Both hace xp pro on.

I configured one of them, and it worked fine, found the domain etc, and i could log in to the network....then...pow.....wont fidn the domain anymore.

So after getting no where trying to get the machine back on the network, i configured the second one to see if it was just that machine. This wont find the domain either.

DNS's, IP's and gateways are all set correct as i can ping the server from them and vice versa...it just wont find the domain its sitting on....

.......any help please would be much appreciated.

Seanos.

Ensure the 2 XP machines are using the correct IP for the WINS server, and ensure the WINS server is functioning correctly.

first join the XP back to its own workgroup (some where its not your domain) so its completely out of the domain

and then go into NT server manager and make sure these XP machine name is not in the list, if so delete it off there

one good indication for two box (ie. the XP and the NT server) can talk to each is to use Internet explorer,
type in

\\(server name) ...

see if its asking you for a username and password
(given that your XP is off the domain)

if it does prompt you are in good shape, if it does not, something wrong with the network setting before you can proceed next step (ie. IP setting, make sure XP firewall and security policy is not blocking anything)

before the next step, make sure you have the XP local admin password you have is handy or known, in case its in no-man's domain and you can't get into XP box then you have to end up reload everything

THEN you rejoin the domain and do a good reboot (do not skip reboot here) .. ideally with a new name so you know if the two does talk to each other

one more good measure, go to NT server manger and do and select the Primary Domain controller to "Synchronize the entire domain" ... before you loggin into the supposely rejoined XP machine .. then you should be able to just fine

I've taken the xp machine out of the domain and removed it from the list using server manager. I have then attempted to put it back on the domain and it still wont find the Domain server. quoting the following error (standard error i suspect)
"The domain name DOMAINA might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the
case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the
following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location
(SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain
DOMAINA:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.DOMAINA

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its
child zone:

DOMAINA
. (the root zone)"

I can ping any machine on our network and have access to the net so i know there is nothing wrong with the ip address settings/gateway etc....

Only thing left would be to try it with WINS. Now as all the machines on out network are win98 until now, i've never had to go into WINS.

Can anyone give me an overview of what i need to do/check for?

Thanks in advanace for anyhelp.

I restored my PC to the factory installation to clean out all changes that I had made. Then I simply added the IP address of PDC to WINS in Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialogue box. (TCP/IP properties - Advanced - WINS tab).
