I have built a computer for my wife's friend. It is an MSI Mobo Nforce2 chipset, AMD XP 2400+,512 ddr400,lite-on cdrw, 80gb WD HD. I allocated 64mb ram to video. I loaded XP Pro + SP1 and the machine kept having random reboots and IE would not work. I then Reformatted and started again. I loaded Xp then tried to load SP1 and now it cannot load cab files. The only difference between the two installs is that on the second I did not load the audio drivers (not varified by microsoft). So far the machine is running fine but I would like to load SP1 and update to the fullest. The computer also scrolls really slow for some reason. Any ideas, Please Help?

Thanks [rednose]

The Windows XP Professional that you are using, did you purchase it? I ask this because Microsoft will not allow you to update an illegal copy of Windows XP to Service Pack 1.

If you have purchased the copy of Windows that you are attempting to update to Service Pack 1, please give a little bit more information about the CAB files you mentioned.

Additionally I have noticed in the past that with nVideo based video cards, imbedded or not, you will be unable to scroll windows or move windows very fast. This is fixed by installing the correct video drivers. Either the outdated ones supplied with the motherboard (if the video is imbedded) or with the video card.

It is a legal copy of Windows Xp Pro. All the message says is "cannot load windows cab files" then gives like xx000000xx00x. I will try to load the drivers from Nvidia's website instead of the ones that came on the cd to see if that works.

I was unable to locate any information about your particular error codes. Please list the complete error message so that I can take a better look. Also you might try going into Event Viewer and looking for any errors that might be associated with the failed install of SP1. If there are any associated errors, please list those.

Event Viewer is located under Administrative tools in Control Panel. There are three log files and they will each have there own specific type of information. The three different log files are default. Depending on your specific configuration and installed applications you might have more listed.

To clarify what you are doing, you are going to Windows Update, scanning your computer for installed components and then selecting the service pack from the listing of available updates? I ask this because most of the stores, online and local, are now selling Windows XP w/ Service Pack 1. If you installed Windows XP from a CD that already included Service Pack 1 and then attempted to install Service Pack 1 from a download, you might get the behavior you are experiencing. This idea is probably completely off however it is something to check out.
