All,

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 running Win XP Pro SP2.

About a week ago, the PC stopped connecting to the internet. After looking in device manager, I noticed a new entry under "Other Devices" called "Ethernet Controller" that has a yellow circle next to it with an exclamation point within in.

Every time I boot the PC, the new hardware found manager comes up and wants to install some drivers for what appears to be this device. But I don't know what it is.

I already have a network card and it shows under "Network Adapters" as "Realtek RTL8029...." and seems to be working fine. It says this is a PCI ethernet adapter in the 2nd pci slot (which it is and always has been).

Can I assume this other adapter is the reason that I cannot connect to the internet? If so, why does XP think I have another adapter? And how do I get it to use the one listed above?

BTW, I already tried to disable and uninstall this new device, but it keeps coming back after each reboot. And nothing has changed on this PC in about a year.

Thanks,
Mark

I had that chipset til a month ago and i had that prob, just cant remember what i did. Except i do think i simply uninstalled everything associated with it and booted up and installed what i needed to and all was well.
Maybe you may have to do the same.

Also, i think i had that prob when i installed SP1! I wait on these sp's for a year before i install them. I am only ready to start installing sp2 now.

There isn't an onboard network adapter?

If there's not, have you tried removing all the network entries (realtek and ! one) in device manager and rebooting to see if it sorts itself out?
