Help with Firewall setting

Hi there,
I guess until now I was just too trusting and thought no one would want anything from my PC - I've nothing to hide... unitl a friend installed Kerio personal firewall on my laptop (Win XP with dial-up) and I saw all the attempted connetctions. However, I have no idea how to set it. What I need, what I don't need, what I don't want. Where might I find a Newbie's guide to all that stuff (ping, udp datagram, svchost, ports, etc...).
Also, my FTP doesn't work anymore. I've allowed all Macromedia ingoing/outgoing traffic, but it is still not working...
