Hi,
I'm having a couple of problems and not sure where to start.

#1
I open Windows Explorer and double-click on a jpg image. The picture doesn't "open" using my photo program.
This happened once before and then went away. I checked "View/Folder Options/File types" and the program information is missing.

#2
I used to just click on a .jpg, and get the small preview. When I check the "Views/Folder Options" etc. Explorer has somehow been set to "Custom". I will change and save it and everything will work as I want for awhile. Then out of nowhere it is back to "Custom".

Is Windows Explorer resetting somehow?

Any advice ?

TIA,

drk

if you have got your Photo-programme installed then;
1. open explorer and locate a Jpg file.
2. highlight the file - but don't open it yet.
3. keep the shift key pressed whilst you place the cursor over the filename, then right click.
4. select the option OPEN WITH
5. make sure there is a tick in the little box under the window so that windows remembers which programme you select.
6. browse to your photo application - if it is not in the list then select Other on the bottom right.
7. find and select your programme, press open press ok and away you go.

As to the "Preview" question,

select View (from the tool bar)
click on VIEW AS WEB PAGE

and you should be all set.

Miggy,

Thanks for the response, but...

I have done that and eventually that setting will just dis-appear and the preview will not take place. I go into "options" and reset to web page.

I ask the question only because I have found soo many times that fixes to an unusual problems are found by changing something in Win98.

1. open My Computer on the desk top.
2. Select view, folder options.
3. on the General tab, select Web Style, apply ok for the single click.
4. go to explorer and select a jpeg - it is on single click so it should preview and then open straight to your application.
5. Reopen My computer.
6. On the General tab select Custom, settings.
7. In the bottom frame select double-click, ok, apply.

Hope that sorts it for you.

Are you talking about IE6.0 and it's ability to resize JPGs? If so, open IE, TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS, ADVANCED and about halfway down check out automatic image resizing, if it's got a tick, untick it.

As to the rest, well WIN98User answered the query very well, but if you say OK only for for a while, then you may have to edit the FOLDER OPTIONS (although WIN98User did a pretty fine job in my opinion).

In WINDOWS EXPORER, click VIEW, at the foot FOLDER OPTIONS, FILE TYPES; the first one in the list should be highlighted. Use your DOWN ARROW key until you get to JPG, highlight it and then click EDIT, now click EDIT again, BROWSE and find

"C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" "%1"

or just copy and paste the above. Click OK, click CLOSE. From now on, IExplore will open your JPG files. If you want another programme to do that, then just browse to the programme you want.

That should be it, but realistacilly, we're talking computers here aren't we?.....and who knows!

OK, here goes, I hope I can explain the problems clearer.

Problem #1
Windows Explorer was set to use my photo program to open .jpgs when I installed that photo program. Somehow, somewhere the "association" seems to just go away. No matter what I did it didn't always work. The association would be OK for a bit, then go away again. This has happened 3 times already. Previously, I had not used the route Win98User suggested (Frankly, I had never seen that pop-up option unless I double-clicked on a unusual .xxx).
I just used it and it worked. Now I'll see how long it lasts.

Problem #2
I can't tell you how many times I have "reset" the View/Folders/ to "Web Style" option. Again, the setting just seems to "go away".

Considering that both situations had similar circumstances, I thought maybe this was a little known problem, but a patch was around somewhere.

Thanks to all who responded, We'll see what happens now.

Here are some more possible things to look at
(since it works for a while then returns to 'custom'):

1. task scheduler - is 'scanreg /restore' in there?

2. system restore (or goback) - have you done that lately?

3. have you uninstalled photo app, rebooted, and installed it again? What was the outcome?

4. downloaded/upgraded new software w/o AV scanning?

5. on a network - possible permissions problem for storing settings in registry

6. Share the computer with anyone else? - recheck all of the above.

Another suggestion, although odd as it may sound, do all of the changes that have worked in the past (even for a short time). Once that is done, export the registry to a file in the root immediately. Reboot sys. When it happens again, simply import the reg file back IN until you have a more perminent solution.
