Can anyone tell me the differences of the AMD cpu's. I have a athlon xp chip now and what to upgrade it. But to which one? There are so many I don't know which way to go.

With all of the different types of Athlon chips, it seems to be a bit confusing. For instance, there is the Athlon XP, Athlon Sempron, Athlon Duron, Athlon Thunderbird, etc. Are there significant differences between these chips?

What is the bottom and which is the top and how do you step up?? Use to be in the intel world you went up by speed then you had full chips and celoron chips. In the AMD world you go by cpu speed and then what? Is Sempron better than athlon XP chip or same but something missing? I have a athlon XP 2400 cpu. I want to go up in speed and through put but still in my buget. I know the new 64 x2 is the best but in what order are the chips. HELP Please...

Found the answer myself. Maybe someone else will find it usefull.

Just to clarify, here is a list of desktop processors from newest to
oldest:
64 Bit Processors:
Athlon 64 X2: Dual Core
Athlon 64 FX: Built For Hardcore Gaming
Athlon 64: Mainstreem Desktop CPU
32 BIt Processors:
Athlon XP: Mainstreem Desktop CPU
Sempron: Value Chip
Athlon: Discontinued
Duron: Discontnued

Now for the explanation of parts. Our Sempron is our value processor, competitively compared to Intel's Celeron. It is built for basic computing needs, such as mild internet browsing and standard office applications. This particular chip is not designed for intense tasks.
Our Athlon XP is our 32 bit mainstreem desktop CPU. Due to the transition into the world of 64 bit computing, the Athlon XP family is being phased out.

As for our older products, the Athlon and the Duron have already been discontinued in production. For your purposes, these two chips (along with the Sempron) would be a down grade.

AMD 64 processors (Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 FX, Athlon 64) all are 32 bit and 64 bit compatable. These processors are capable of supporting virtually all 32 bit hardware and software, while enabling a smooth migration path to 64 bit computing. However, these processors sit in socket 754 or socket 939. The Athlon XP 2400 that you are currently
running sits in socket A (462 pin).

Upgrading to a 64 bit ready system would require upgrading your motherboard to accommodate the new socket architecture. Sticking with a 32 bit system would require an Athlon XP greater than 2400. You will need to ensure that your current motherboard will support the newer
chip. It is recommended to move to a 64 bit platform, given the fact that Athlon XP processors are soon to be completely phased out.

Lastly, find time to browse our Techincal Support Web site at ask.amd.com (no Here, you will find answers to commonly asked questions regarding our processors. This site serves as an excellent resource.

You need to know your Motherboard model and Mfg to insure support for what you are considering. You are socket compatible with several of the Sempron mdls. If you are considering the 64 chip you will have to upgrade the mobo also and have two choices in socket pin count 754 and 939. The links below should answer you concerns.

For Sempron

For Anthlon XP
