Help! Window update not working

Hello,

I'm trying to fix my uncles computer which he did not update windows for a VERY long time. I try to go to windows update, and it get stuck on the screen...

"checking for latest version of windows update software"

I can progress past this part only in safe mode, but I believe window can not update in safe mode.

I know this computer has some massive problems...

1. He did not have a anti virus updated, I ran a virus scan and removed 25 viruses.
2. Tons of spyware and adware I removed.
3. Zonealarm does not start, only starts in safe mode properly.

Please help, I don't know what to do anymore.

I would clean install. Second choice would be a repair reinstallation:
