My PC has taken a major fall and I can't recoop. Every action outside of windows explorer I am given an "program error" windows. I can't get to my IE Exploter, email or any other program! For whatever program I initate, I get this message "???.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created." The only option give after that is OK. I access the net and this site by clicking on MS updates. Anyone seen this before. First time on me.

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

If you have ad-aware. See if you can boot into safe mode run that program to see if there is malware.
Since you have a net connection and if you have your copy of Windows 2000 professional handy go to this site and read how to do a repair.

Thanks for the tip. Luckly I have a spare HD with Win2K already installed in it. That is how I am able to read your tip. Im going to go on that link you sent me now and see what happens.

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

No luck so far. Can I run Win2K Pro installation over the existing Windows 2000 with out loosing any of my existing files? I am trying to avoid coping all my files before doing a fresh install.

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

yes you can. boot from the setup cdrom (dont run from within windows) -- chose to setup windows2000, choose the location of c:\winnt and then choose to repair that installation.

of course, its better to clean it up before trying that. go to add/remove programs (if possible) and remove any unneeded/unrecognized programs such as screensavers, search bars, cool offers, webrebates, popup stoppers, etc. keep rebooting when prompted to do so. thats the first step, but it might get things usable enough to do repairs rather than reinstall, which might not clear out the problems.

Thanks for the tip; part of the problem is that I can't get into anything in my PC. Not ever add/remove software. It is a royal mess I'm telling you. I am hoping that by installing Win2K again, it will replace any damaged or altered files. Here I go now.

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

Well I just finished installing Win2K and the problem didnot go away. I guess I'll have to use another drive to move all my data out of this HD and wipe it clean for a fresh install. The one thing that is different is that when I comes time to log in, I am now presented with two Windows 2000 Professional lines to choose from. I thought the re-install would install on to the original version? Did I miss something? The link given earlier by htmlman was not too clear. I tried it but when I got to the repair consol didn't know how to pressed from there?

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

I am now running my original installation and running in safe-mode. I am able to run adaware and now running spy sweeper. Adware only found one entry out of norm and spyweeper is still running. Under normal mode, I would not been able to run these programs. I hope this fact gives someone a clue as to what the heck is wrong with my pc. Why can't I run these program in normal mode but can run them in safe-mode? What is prevented from loading in safe-mode that I can point to as the culprid?

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

Spysweep just finish running and found some junk in my pc; cleaned it and restarted in normal mode. The problem is still there. As soon as Windows went on line, an error message come on "WZQPICK.exe has encountered an error and will shut down." My other programs will not work. I was able to run Norton anti-virus, something that I couldn't earlier, and is scanning the whole HD. We'll see what I encounter on the screen tomorrow morning.

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

Get a copy of AVG and install. Even if you have to install it on the running computer and slave the problem drive . They choose the option to scan the problem drive and see what comes up. I have seen Norton's miss a few viruses that AVG will find.

Thanks for the tip. I just downloaded AVG, installed it and ran it. All this from my second hard drive and my main drive as slave. AVG found a trojan virus, deleted it and the system was fine after that; however, I reconnected my main drive back to master and when I went to log on, all my users and passwords had desappeared. I had to log on as administrator and then create my original identity. My original files seem to all be there. How weird. Not the test is, can I access/start my various programs. Wish me luck.

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

Well I have gone from bad to really really bad. My original drive is still a mess. I tried installing Win2K again and now I have two Win2K to boot from; the first one is the new installation; so I have to be there to select the second one which is my original installation. BOTH versions have the same original problem. Can launch any programs. To make matters worse, I installed a fresh copy of Win2K on a new Drivei (160GB) and all was running fine; I even connected the two drives so that I could move all my files from the original drive (60GB) to the new one (160GB). Then I disconnedted them. Now when I try to boot from my new drive, I have a new problem. "Limited Virtual Memeory" "Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too small". I am then give a set of commands to follow to correct this followed by the OK button. Problem is when I click the OK button, I am sent back to my log in page. I can't get on Windows at all. I tried going in in safe mode but the same thing happened as in normal mode. Any ideas how to correct that "paging file" crap?

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

Since you have all the files moved and the new drive is ok I would delete the partitions on the troubled drive and place a new partition and format then reinstall the OS. Work with it awhile. First thing is to place the anti virus and fire wall before you hook it up to a network. That would be the easiest way. Unless you want to copy the page file from another good OS.
