We are currently migrating NT 4.0 to 2003. We have just upgraded our PDC to 2003. We wanted to keep using our current domain name but the only options we are getting are:
1. Domain in a new forest.
2. Child domain in an existing domain tree.
3. Domain tree in an existing forest.

We really don't want to change domain name.

You want option 1. There is no forest yet, you need to create one. You'll get the chance to keep the old netbios name, and you'll have to specify a fully qualified domain name as well.

Thanks for the reply.
We already tried option 1, it tells us we can't use the current domain name because it's already in use.
1 PDC 2 BDC all on NT 4.0
Did an upgrade in place on the PDC.
Current domain: mydomain.org
Tried to enter mydomain.org as the new domain but it says that domain name is already in use.
What if we name it mydomain.com and then change the name back to mydomain.org after the bdc's are upgraded?
If we proceed with a name change, how will this affect communication with the old bdcs and users? New DC will be on newdomain.org and old bdcs will be on mydomain.org.
Really need to keep current domain name for internet and email access.

if your old domain name is mydomain, and that's the name you're using in netbios, then its blocking there...

Aftertaf
if its not broken, fix it anyway - with luck you might break it and have an excuse

Do you really need the .org? are you hosting any dns or your own website??? If not, you don't need to use a FQDN for your domain...

If your network is just basic with an internal dns server, then call your domain mydomain.local, it should allow you to work with both servers...

If in doubt, google for .local versus .com or fqdn.

We need the .org because we host our own email server. We do have a website but it is hosted by our ISP.
IF our DNS domain name is mydomain.org can the AD domain be different? Such as mydomain.local or local.mydomain.org?
Thanks for the help.

an mx record is tied to an ip address... you do not need a .com or .org domain name for your internal domain if all you're worried about is a mail server.
