Well Hello All!

Firstly let me explain my problem.

I have an little but annoying problem, My PC wont automatially turn it's self off once I've shut it down. It's a problem that it's been having for a few months. It used to shut itself off fine, but for some reason unknown to me it's stopped.
I have checked the bios setting's and it is still on Instant off. I have changed it to delay, and then back to instant. But no joy.
So I thought, I'll update the bios.
But not as easy as I thought.
I would like your suggestions.
My BIOS Info as follows:

BIOS ID: 6A6LMM4SC
BIOS date: 05/02/01
BIOS signon: 05/02/2001-8361-686B-6A6LMM4SC-00
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
Super I/0: VIA 686 rev 64 Found at port 7h
Chipset: VIA 82c3112 rev 0
OEM Signon: W6378MS V1.3 050201 Time Computers (MK_G3).

Thanks in Advance!

Hayley

Not a bios problem, a M$ problem.

That bios setting you mention defines how the power button works, not how Windows shuts itself down. Why it doesn't shut down automatically? Take a pick of a million things that can cause that behavior...

Hello Hayley78,
I agree with Dakota81. Are you getting the " Its now safe to shut down" screen or is it just simply hanging when you try and shut down? Try booting up in safe mode and see if it will shut down correctly.

Yes it does just sit at the "It's now safe to shut down" screen, and I'll have to hold the power button for (what seems like forever) a few seconds before it turns it self off.
When I boot it in safe mode, It still does the same!

Please could you offer me any suggestions

Thanks again for your help so far!

Have you install a Norton AntiVirus recently, that's a known problem forever.

I am using windows xp.

No I don't have norton any more, I did once but I replaced it with sophos!

could it still be that.?

are there any fixes for that if so?!

Thanks again.

Oh FYI,

I am using Norton Firewall 2003 and Norton Ghost 2003. Will that cause the same problem as the Anti Virus appz??

Take a look at Power Managment,Advanced, in Control Panel and see if it is set it to Shutdown.

Thanks everyone!!!

I have managed to find a soultion from one of the links that Crisc posted.
Which was:
RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options.

Click the APM tab.

Check to select the Enable Advanced Power Management Support check box, and then click OK.

But I'd like to thank you all for your help.
I think this is the best site, please, for people like me. "keep up the good work".
