Hi everyone,

Our network is using NT 4 workstations and servers. Somehow the users are able to save to the hard drive even though I thought it was securely locked down. We use System Policy Editor to remove run and find commands. We put read only security on the profile. And lock it down with Ntuser.man. The desktop contains all the icons users are allowed to access. When logging off and back on, the set up desktop construction is supposed to return to our original settings.

We find the new icons on the desktop disappear upon logging in. But when we go to start/documents and click on the files, the file boots showing it is actually saved on the hard drive.

How else can I lock these computers down? What did I miss?

Thanks for the help,
TechLady

Its probably saved all of their icons into their profile folder (c:\WINNT\profiles\USERNAME\desktop).
We have had a similar problem at our work where we have two domains running along side one another. The reason for this is we get a lot of contracted workers in and its easier to manage. Anyway, we find that when they save their timesheets to their desktop, it seems to save it onto the actual computer's desktop.

That bit about:
But when we go to start/documents and click on the files, the file boots showing it is actually saved on the hard drive,

Have you tried going to START -> DOCUMENTS and checking the properties of them to make sure that they are definately not loading off the server?

If I think of anything else, I'll post it...
