I've never upgraded the IOS on a Cisco router before. Can someone please tell me how to do it? In front of me I have the router, a console cable, my laptop with XP Pro and the bin file which contains the upgrade.

Basically, what is the process of uploading the bin file to the router?

Regards,

Is there currently an older IOS on the router now. Would be much faster to use a tftp server to flash it via ethernet instead of xmodem via console cable.
Solarwinds has a good free tftp server....see link below...
If there is no IOS it is still possible to flash the IOS from rommon mode.

Ethernet as follows:

Connect router ethernet port to laptop with crossover cable or router to hub/switch and hub/switch to latop with std cables. Configure router ethernet to communicate with laptop or vice/versa. Verify connection via ping. Start tftp server on laptop. From router# prompt the command is copy tftp flash. You will need to know the ip address of the tftp server, the IOS filename, and then just use the default for the destination. You may be prompted to erase the old file prior to loading the new one....this is normal. Also make sure before starting this that the IOS you are loading will fit in the router. Also since you are doing this with a laptop make sure it is on AC power....you dont want your laptop crashing in the middle of flashing it.
