Hola all,

I am a bit of a data telecom geek who is about to implement Exchange 2003 at this tiny company that I work for. Please take a look at my rough outline for implementing Exchange. Let me know if I have missed anything, or any 'gotchas' you for see. Thank you in advance.

Cheers,

Jason

============================================================

? Step1(Days=1): Install Windows Server 2003 update with patches from Microsoft
? Step2(Days=1): Basic installation and configuration of Exchange, follow exchange installation script (It proved nearly flawless in testing)
? Step3(Days=2): Advanced configuration of Exchange:
? Install and configure antivirus software
? Configure rules for sending and receiving: Spam Filter, RBL, IMF
? Configure to prevent relaying (The default Exchange 2000/2003 configuration does not allow unauthenticated users to relay through the server.
? Install and configure EVault Exchange backup client
? Enable windows firewall to reduce the effects of an internal attack from a worm or otherwise

? Step4 (Days=3): Add and configure user/email accounts and resources with information including address, location, phone number etc.
? Step5(Partial day): Re-address machine with internet routable IP and create secondary MX record
? Step6 (Days=30): Test solution with a group of test users. The lengthier and more system resource intensive this test is the more effective it will be. I am confident in this solution implementing relatively smoothly because it is MS Exchange on MS Server on “Win-Tel” hardware, it is nowhere near as unique as rest of our infrastructure.
We will need to test:
? Sending emails to and from internal and external accounts with attachments, multiple accounts with attachments for stress testing
? Test sending emails to groups
? Scheduling appointments and reserving resources i.e. the boardroom
? Using through the VPN, both PPTP and IPSec (TO-Calgary-BC),
? MS Exchange Outlook web interface
? Test for relaying and spam filtering
? Test failover back to old server

? Step7 (Days=3): Roll out to the remaining users (have users configure their outlook with the new account), users will still be using mail1.xxxxxxxx.com (Qmail) for their default account at this time.
? Step8 (Days=1) Image server to the RAID (Software needed)
? Step9 (Days=1): Promote to primary mail server, maintain old mail server as secondary MX and backup. Have users switch to their default mail account in Outlook to the default.
