The choice is yours.
IMHO, C++ is more powerful since it allows your to reach into the "guts" of your machine and do things that are difficult to do in VB. It is also available on most operating systems.
VB allows you to make user-friendly screens fast. It will only run on Windows, though.
Some C++ program, i.e. Borland's C++ Builder (BCB) is a rapid application development (RAD) package that can create applications as fast as VB. Borland is in the process of porting BCB to Linux.

The decision of course depends on what you're going to do as a programmer, and what amount of time you'd expect to spend at the computer developing and debugging (fixing errors) in your programs.
Are you working for yourself, or someone else?
Regardless of the answer to this question, you still like to watch movies, swim in the ocean, go to parties, have a decent marriage. The point I'm making making is that no one spends 24 hours a day at their computers, not even computer programmers, and it is extremely difficult to have a worthwhile life without money, and time to take care of other things that make life worth living.

um, the vice versa is also true (VB can support server programming and c++ can support client)
better is the wrong term to use, it's like this, which is better, a hammer or a screwdriver, well if you are using a nail, clearly the hammer, on the other hand if you are using a screw, then the otherway around.
